A New Month begins on what is called Rosh Chodesh1, the head of the month. The Scriptural Day according to B'resheet/Genesis begins at sunset, so does the first day of each new month.  There are several factors that determine when Rosh Chodesh begins.  Although some camps seem to make things really complicated, it's not difficult to determine.  By observing the waxing and waning moon we know when the moon will be completely dark and when it will be full.  Since the festivals of Unleavened Bread and Succoth both fall on full moons we know that in Biblical times the new moon would be both calculated and sighted according to these markers.

The very first visible crescent is  a backwards marker, when it appears that tells us that Rosh Chodesh has already been.  The reason we know this is because those who use the visible crescent as a forward marker are often have their ULB and Succoth a day or two after the full moon... Oops.

Jerusalem is the place that demarcates YHWH's Feasts.  If we are not living in Jerusalem, we make our calculations for Rosh Chodesh on Jerusalem time.

We celebrate after Jerusalem, not before!  Why?

Jerusalem is the point in time and space where YHWH establishes Mashiyach's government on this earth. Jerusalem is where YHWH causes His Name to live!  As watchmen we are watching and waiting for Mashiyach to return to, where again?  Mount Olives Jerusalem!  Therefore, we do not go before Jerusalem but express our solidarity with the City of David as one people, one global family.  We yield our own time to Jerusalem time and thus our authority over to Mashiyach.

We celebrate according to the Word of YHWH, not the Traditions of men!

YHWH has set forth specific requirements in Tanakh to establish Rosh Chodesh each Year.  Regrettably, poor translations of the Bible make it very difficult for worshippers to come to unity on Rosh Chodesh dates, for example, from the King James version of the Bible:

Blow up the trumpet in the new moon,

in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

(Psalm 81:3)

There is only 6 Hebrew words in this verse:

taqa (blow) shofar (trumpet) chodesh (moon) kece (appointed) chag (feast) yom (day)

All straightforward, except for the word kece, which is translated as "appointed" in the King Jimmie.  The root word kacah means:  to cover, to conceal, to hide, to clothe.  Ooops, that doesn't mean a "full moon" because a full moon certainly isn't hiding, and, it cannot mean the first sliver of the moon because that isn't "hiding" or "concealed" either.  Kece can only refer to when the moon cannot be seen at all.

But if you thought King Jimmie was confused check this out:

Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and when

the moon is full, on the day of our Feast.

(Psalm 81:3 NIV)

What happened was, "the traditions of men" got the best of these two translators.  On the one hand yes, Feast of Unleavened Bread and Succoth both fall on FULL Moons, however we blow the ram's horn (shofar) on the New Moon, when it is concealed, not when it is full.

Yeshua asked some tough questions of the religious community for instance,

"Why do you also transgress the commandment of Elohim by your tradition?"

Matthew 15:3

Mashiyach said it this way, "You hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,  This people draws close to me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." Matthew 15:7-9

Paul said it this way, "Do we then make void the Torah through faith?  YHWH forbid: yea, we ESTABLISH the Torah."  Romans 3:31

According to the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Orthodox Jews will follow certain calculations of the New Year until Mashiyach comes, then Rosh Chodesh will be re-established according to the original methodology.  Very few would be foolish enough to argue with the Rebbe on this point, however who or what gives man the right to deviate from the Word of YHWH in the first place?  Do you give men the authority to change the Word of YHWH?  Those who follow Tradition would rather give men the authority than YHWH Himself who created and sustains all things!

"At the time when the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court of Torah law) existed, the onset of a new month was proclaimed each month based on the sighting of the new moon (the confirmation marker that a new moon had begun) and calculations for the full moon.  This will be resumed with the coming of Moshiach and the re-establishment of a central Torah authority for Israel. Today, the Rabbinical pre-set calendar is not exact.

What is the basis for the solar calendar, using the equinox, tekufah or tekufot  theories?

Why is it important that we observe the Moedim (Appointed Times) as YHWH prescribed?

The correct answer is because YHWH said so.  Yeshua and all His Talmidim observed the Moedim as set forth by YHWH.  Over the last 2500 years there have been various factions and schools within Judaism both inside and outside of Israel that have put forth ideas about the timing of the Rosh Chodoshim.

On the basis of the Word of YHWH we need two things, a new moon and aviv barley that ensures that the firstfruits will be ready to be offered unto YHWH.  No one is to eat of the new barley until the omer is brought before YHWH.  It would be perplexing for thousands of souls to see ripe fields of barley each day but not be allowed to eat of it, this is why we watch for the aviv and sanctify the Rosh Chodesh according to His Word.

Tradition abounds also when it comes to observing Pesach, the Jewish Historian Yoseph Ben Mattathias records that the Netzarim celebrated "Pesach" for 8 days, not 7.  Aramaic and Hebrew New Testament texts indicate that Yeshua and His Talmidim celebrated Pesach as a unique and separate day from the First day of Unleavened Bread.

Several passages in the Ketuvim Netzarim refer to a "feast of the Jews".  John 5:1 "After this there was a feast of the Yehudeans; and Yeshua went up to Jerusalem."  John 6:4 "And the Passover, a feast of the Yehudeans, was nigh."  John 7:2  "Now the Yehudeans' feast of Tabernacles was at hand."  John 11:55  "And the Yehudeans' Passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves."  Why would Yochanan (John), a nice Jewish boy write about "the Yehudeans", the only time Jews refer to "a feast of the Jews" is when speaking about "the other Jews".  Here are some possibilities;

     1) John wasn't a Jew

     2) John was using an idiomatic expression

     3) Judeans is a reference to Jews

     4) Judeans is a reference to those who lived in Judea

     5) Greek translators messed with the text

Yochanan (John) was a Jew of course, and he was the forerunner of Mashiyach himself!  Yochanan, along with Jews then and today often speak of "the Jews" as those who are religious.  Yochanan might not have written "the Yehudeans Passover" unless there was more than one date set for Passover.  Yochanan was also writing to a Jewish audience, and, the only time two Jews need to refer to the "feasts of the Jews", is when referring to "them", not "us".  We know from history that some Yehudeans were doing Pesach on different dates, but it appears, at least at this time in history, that the sanctification of the Month was consistent among the various sects.  We see a similar expression that Yochanan uses with Paul:

Galatians 1:13  "For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the Kehillath of Elohim, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers."  Everybody knows that Shaul was a Pharisee, Jews' religion is therefore an idiomatic term for Pharisaism, just like the "Feasts of the Jews" are referring to the "Feasts of the Pharisees".

Mankind has a tendency to go with the flow, it's easy to pop a calendar up on the wall and let someone else do the heavy lifting and figure out when the Set Times of YHWH are.  It's easy to say, "good enough" and go with what is the majority.  Perhaps you recall from history that Polycarp, a second generation disciple of John, was burnt alive because his contemporaries wanted to observe Easter on it's appointed time, instead of of Pesach, YHWH's appointed time!

YHWH has set His Appointed Times, woe to those who don't care, either way.  Polycarp wasn't the only one whose blood was shed when paganism came to town, there were many others, now it's your turn to choose... do you go with the Truth or do you follow Tradition?

Celebrating the Feasts According to Mashiyach's Government

The prophetic implications of the Feasts of YHWH boggles the mind considering that Yeshua said WATCH, PRAY and be extremely vigilant regarding the time of His return.  But mankind has made their own image of god, by traditions that  epitomize Babylon, and are steeped in Hellenism.  We must come out from spiritual Babylon, to see and live according to YHWH's timetable.  The Moedim are from the Ancient of Days, from the time YHWH touched a point in time and space and created the Universe, there have been Set Times.  YHWH chose Jerusalem, therefore it is Jerusalem where the reckoning of the New Moons and the Barley begins, because the government of Mashiyach is universal, and Jerusalem is the capital city of his Kingdom.

If you consider yourself to be a son or daughter of Jerusalem then you know this is "Spiritual Jerusalem," it is a Jerusalem that you may not be able to see right now, but you know that Jerusalem above exists and you know that there is a "city whose builder and maker is Elohim."  Whether you are a Canadian, American, European, South African or from any continent on this earth, if you follow Mashiyach then the government you surrender to is over all the governments of this earth and you aren't that government but you are to uphold it.

In other words, I wrote this article while in Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada.  If we, who are outside of Israel were to sanctify the New Moon before Israel, then the demarcation of time would start here in Canada and end back in Jerusalem.  North Americans would set rule of government over Jerusalem, but of course that would not work when Mashiyach returns.  There are reasons we might not know or understand, but we are not usurp authority from Mashiyach and go ahead of his government.  Think about it, but that's exactly what most Judeo-Christian religions have been doing ever since he came to this earth!

Another thing I've heard among some "believers" is... "I have no interest to go to Jerusalem," and "there is so much violence in Jerusalem," and "how can Jerusalem mean anything for us today?"  It is sad that some "believers" are so out of touch with Mashiyach!  They have no eyes to see or ears to hear, what Mashiyach is doing and how he is preparing for his people and his city.  YHWH is drawing His people and all their enemies up to the city of Jerusalem even as we speak.  Everyone wants a piece of the Rock.  Every unclean bird and false authority and religious demon inspired hierarchy is setting up shop in Jerusalem to roll out their anti-Messiah.  But obviously YHWH has His own plans.

Many believers are getting nervous because the plans of the Rothchilds, Rockerfellers and Bilderberger group (the oligarchs of the earth) are all over the TV, rather than keep their focus on Mashiyach.  The point is that if you don't love what Mashiyach loves, why not?  Why can't we prefer Jerusalem above all other places when we know this is where Mashiyach will return?  Obviously it's because a person's religious and political worldview is influenced by factors outside of Scripture.

We don't wait until Mashiyach returns before we start entering into his government, we do it now!  Today is the acceptable day to realize that Mashiyach is a government, not a religion.  We wait for Jerusalem, Jerusalem goes first, the rest of the world follows.

It's a good time to step out in Faith,

keep the Appointed Times in their seasons,

listen to the Ruach HaKodesh for Discernment, and

receive the revelation of Mashiyach ben Daveed!

"Thus says YAHWEH, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths,

where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

But they said, We will not walk therein."

Jeremiah 6:16

May you and all your loved ones,

together with all the Israel of Elohim,

have a most blessed Chag Sameach!

YHWH be with you,

Shalom U'Vrachot,

Baruch Ben Daniel

Blessings await for all who follow YHWH's Appointed Times,

and who labor to "Restore the Ancient Paths"!

1 During Tishri 2010 I've rewritten this page and added more information about Rosh Chodesh, it was pointed out to me that my previous article was too simplistic and had caused a bit of confusion, but also over the last 2 or 3 years I've looked much closer into Rosh Chodesh than ever and needed to change a few things to build a more solid Scriptural base for this topic.
